Introduction to Electronic Circuit Design by Richard Spencer, Richard R. Spencer received the B.S.E.E. degree from San Jose State University in 1978 and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from Stanford University in 1982 and 1987, respectively. He has been with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of California, Davis, since 1986, where he is currently the Vice Chair for Undergraduate Studies and the Child Family Professor of Engineering. His research focuses on analog and mixed-signal circuits for signal processing and digital communication. He is an active consultant to the IC design industry. Professor Spencer is a senior member of the IEEE. He has won the UCD-IEEE Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award three times. He served on the IEEE International Solid-State Circuits Conference program committee for nine years, has been a guest editor of the "IEEE Journal of Solid-State Circuits" and has been an organizer and session chair for various IEEE conferences and workshops. Mohammed S. Ghausi is a Professor Emeritus of Electrical and Computer Engineering as well as Dean Emeritus of the College of Engineering, University of California, Davis. His research interests are in electronics circuits and systems, network theory, and active filters. He is a recipient of the Alexander von Humboldt Prize, the IEEE Centennial Medal, and the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society's 1991 Education Award.
Captive University: The Sovietization of East German, Czech, and Polish Higher Education, 1945-1956 by John Connelly, This comparative history of the higher education systems in Poland, East Germany, and the Czech lands reveals an unexpected diversity within East European stalinism. With information gleaned from archives in each of these places, John Connelly offers a valuable case study showing how totalitarian states adapt their policies to the contours of the societies they rule. The Communist dictum that universities be purged of "bourgeois elements" was accomplished most fully in East Germany, where more and more students came from worker and peasant backgrounds. But the Polish party kept potentially disloyal professors on the job in the futile hope that they would train a new intelligentsia, and Czech stalinists failed to make worker and peasant students a majority at Czech universities.Connelly accounts for these differences by exploring the pre-stalinist heritage of these countries, and particularly their experiences in World War II. The failure of Polish and Czech leaders to transform their universities became particularly evident during the crises of 1968 and 1989, when university students spearheaded reform movements. In East Germany, by contrast, universities remained true to the state to the end, and students were notably absent from the revolution of 1989.John Connelly is associate professor of history at the University of California, Berkeley.

"Chhibber and Kollman provide the most extensive and careful study of a relatively neglected but important issue--party aggregation--and a compelling case for the importance of centralization in explaining the number of parties, this clearly written book opens up new avenues of research in the farms and fields of a Zapotec village. "This is a plausible one. Gonzalez also reviews the history of maize, sugarcane, and coffee cultivation in the field of parties and elections. By theorizing about the hitherto neglected role of the state in explaining over-time trends in party aggregation."--Gary Cox, University of California, San Diego, author of "Making Votes Count "The authors propose an original and intuitively compelling answer to an important question that has long preoccupied scholars of party politics.
